Free Canva: what the free plan really allows

Canva really is free: the Canva Free plan has no end date, asks for no credit card and adds no watermark to your designs. Yes. Canva's free plan is not a disguised trial: it has no time limit, requires no payment method, and your exports carry no watermark. The limit is not a duration, it is a catalogue: some assets and a handful of advanced features are reserved for the Pro subscription.

In other words, what frustrates people on the free plan is almost never an editing feature: it is the crown sitting on the photo they had just picked. The good news is that this takes one click to fix, which is what the next section is about.

How do you use Canva for free?

Go to canva.com, create a free account with Google, Apple or an email address, pick your format (Instagram post, presentation, resume, poster), then turn on the “Free” filter in the templates and elements panels. Finish with “Share” then “Download” as PNG, JPG or PDF. No credit card is requested at any point.

The one habit that changes everything: the “Free” filter

By default, Canva mixes free and paid content in the same search results. That is what makes it feel like a paid tool dressed up as a free one. In both the “Templates” and “Elements” panels, open the filters and tick “Free”. You then only see what you can actually use, and you stop discovering the crown at download time.

Second habit, if you are already deep into a design: replace the premium asset rather than give up on the design. A right click, then a filtered search on a nearby keyword, is usually enough.

Canva without an account: what works and what does not

No, you cannot create and download a design without an account. You can browse and preview the template catalogue freely, and open a read-only share link someone sends you. But saving, editing and exporting all require a free account, which takes less than a minute to create with Google or Apple, and no payment method.

Sites promising “Canva with no sign-up” are either plain preview pages or resold shared accounts. Those shared accounts break Canva's terms of service: they get disabled regularly, and every design stored in them goes down with the account. For a tool whose free version is already generous, it is a bad trade.

Canva on a PC: browser or app?

Both are free and give access to the same features. Canva runs entirely in the browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari), and also offers a free desktop app for Windows and macOS. To download Canva for free on a PC, go through canva.com/download or the Microsoft Store, never a third-party site.

The desktop app is not offline software: it needs a connection, since your designs live in your account. Its real benefit is comfort, a dedicated window, the fonts installed on your machine, and more direct file drag-and-drop. The same account follows you on mobile, where the app is free as well.

How do you get Canva Pro for free?

Beyond the free plan, four official routes give access to Canva Pro features without paying: the 30-day free trial, Canva for Education (teachers and their students), Canva for Nonprofits (registered nonprofit organisations) and Canva for Startups (eligible early-stage companies). None of them involves a workaround, and all of them go through an eligibility check.

1. The Canva Pro free trial

Canva offers a free trial of Canva Pro, usually 30 days. It requires a payment method and turns into a paid subscription unless it is cancelled before the end. The practical advice: put the end date in your calendar the day you start the trial, and download your important designs before it expires.

2. Students and teachers

Canva for Education gives Pro features for free to primary and secondary school teachers and their students, after the school has been verified. In higher education, free access usually comes through an agreement between Canva and your school or university: the right move is to ask your IT department or student services whether access is already open with your academic email address, before paying anything.

3. Canva for nonprofits

The Canva for Nonprofits program offers Pro features to registered nonprofit organisations. You apply on Canva's website with your registration number, your statutes and a description of your mission. Verification is handled by an external partner and usually takes one to four weeks. Political parties, trade unions and government bodies are not eligible.

This is by far the most valuable of the four routes, because it is not time-limited as long as the organisation stays eligible, and it includes a shared workspace for volunteers.

4. Startups and early-stage companies

Using the free plan for real documents: resumes, PDFs, AI

Three uses come up again and again in searches about free Canva. Here is exactly what the free plan allows for each, without rounding things off in the convenient direction.

Making a resume with free Canva

Yes, you can create and download a resume entirely for free. Search for “resume” in the templates, turn on the “Free” filter, replace the text, then export as a standard PDF. There is no watermark and no download limit.

One tip worth more than the choice of template: many companies run resumes through screening software before a human reads them, and that software copes badly with multi-column layouts, boxed sections and information carried by an icon. Pick a plain single-column template, keep job titles as text, and never lock essential information inside an image. If the job ad asks for an email application, standard PDF is the right format, lighter than print PDF.

Free Canva and PDFs

PDF export is included in the free plan, in both variants: standard PDF, lightweight, for screens and email, and print PDF, heavier, with crop marks and bleed for a printer. Importing an existing PDF to edit it in Canva is also possible without paying.

Two honest caveats about PDFs. Importing one makes Canva an approximate editor: the layout is rebuilt, unrecognised fonts are substituted, and a complex document often comes out misaligned. And for demanding professional printing, Canva offers no fine control over colour profiles: a fussy printer will ask for a file prepared in another tool.

Canva's AI features on the free plan

Canva's AI features (assisted writing, image generation, media creation) are available on the free plan, but with a reduced trial quota, in the region of a few dozen uses, against several hundred per month on Pro. Background remover and magic eraser, on the other hand, stay entirely reserved for Pro.

These quotas are the fastest-moving part of Canva: they have been reshuffled several times since launch, sometimes counted for life, sometimes per month, sometimes converted into credits shared across all AI features. Be wary of articles quoting a precise figure without dating it, this one included. The exact number you have left is shown in your account, at the moment you open the feature.

What are the downsides of Canva?

Canva's main downside is not its price, it is sameness: millions of people start from the same templates, and a Canva design is often recognisable at a glance. Then come five concrete limits: premium assets everywhere, no real colour control for printing, no way to export to professional software formats, dependence on Canva's cloud, and a free 5 GB of storage that fills up fast.

Visual sameness

This is the most serious limit for a brand. A template used as-is produces a design that is correct and anonymous. The remedy is simple but takes effort: always swap the fonts and colours for your own, and keep the template's structure rather than its skin.

The crown, and what happens when you stop paying

An important point, rarely explained: if you use premium assets during a Pro subscription or a trial, then go back to the free plan, those assets are not yours to keep. Your old designs stay visible, but a fresh download will come back watermarked or ask you to buy the asset individually. Export your important files before a trial ends.

Lock-in

Your designs live in your Canva account, not on your disk. There is no export to professional software formats, and vector SVG export is reserved for Pro. In practice, if you one day hand your visual identity to a designer, they will start from scratch rather than reuse your files. On top of that comes sluggishness on long documents: a presentation of several dozen pages gets slow in the browser.

Should you upgrade to Canva Pro?

Stay on the free plan if you produce a few visuals a month and the crown is not blocking you. Move to Pro if three things are true at once: you create every week, you have a brand identity to enforce, and you are wasting time working around the background remover or resizing. In August 2026, Canva Pro is listed at around 12 € a month, or 109.99 € for a one-year commitment.
